Red-winged Blackbird

At about the same size as a crow, the vibrant red hue of their feathers makes them distinct. The coloring comes from carotenoids in their diet. Surprisingly, they consume just right quantities of food to create a balance of red and yellow. Dietary changes during captivity can dull this crimson spectacle, transforming it into a subdued brown.

Widespread across various regions North America year-round, these birds exhibit a notable migration pattern, with northern migrants making an early appearance in spring, the males preceding their female counterparts.
